The Latest in Preservation from Australia:

THE 3801 PROJECT:

Steam Locomotive 3801 was built in 1943 by Clyde Engineering and has been in preservation since its retirement from the NSW Railways in 1962.

The locomotive was withdrawn from heritage service in 2007 as it required major boiler repairs. Deciding for a new boiler (from a German tender) compliance issues with Australian standards encouraged reverting back to repairing the original boiler to ensure it met safety and operational requirements and return the locomotive back to service in the shortest possible time frame.

Repairs to the original boiler have since been completed by Ainsworths of Goulburn, with the boiler returning to Chullora on 1 July 2019. The boiler has since been reunited with the locomotive and certified on 21 October 2019. The engine was to be officially relaunched on Friday 27 March 2020 at Sydney’s Central Station… this has since been postponed until a suitable later date.

Pioneer of Motor Scrapers:

Mr Robert Gilmore LeTourneau, the proprietor of an earth-moving business, was the developer of the first motor scraper. This, it is speculated came from an idea while sleeping [requires clarifying]. Having previously developed such pull-type scrapers as the Model A and Model B Carryall, he was prepared to move in another direction. His introduction of the Model A Tournapull in the late 1930s was the first scraper to be mounted on large rubber tires. The two-wheeled tractor was designed with a 90-degree swing in either direction, a first in the industry. This machine could travel up to 20 miles (32 km) per hour.

LeTourneau’s earth-moving company was sold to the Westinghouse Air Brake Co. in 1953, forming the LeTourneau-Westinghouse Co. With this acquisition came the upgrade of LeTourneau’s models, which would be known as Wabco products by the early 1960s.

Developments such as the Model B and C Speedpull arose in the late 1950s. These motor scrapers had three axles and four wheels, 600 horsepower, and could travel at speeds of up to 40 miles (64 km) per hour. By 1960, Wabco had added a second bowl onto the Speedpull—the tandem Model B was outfitted with two 29-cubic yard (22-m3) scrapers. More powerful, faster models were subsequently developed…
