Following the death of their Mom, Kelly (13) and her younger sister Chris (10) must leave the city to live with their estranged father, a free-spirited, ex-rodeo champ who lives in a tiny Ranch bunkhouse located precisely in the middle of nowhere. Unprepared for fatherhood, Mac gives the situation his best shot is spite of intense hostility from the girls, with some help from a court-appointed counselor.

This drama starring Denzel Washington, Viola Davis & Jovan Adepo Movie set in the earlier years of the 19th century is about a Husband called Troy, an African-American man who once longed to be a baseball player but missed an opportunity due to racism. A dejected man, he takes out his frustration on his loved ones and ruins his son’s home life and almost his future.

In 1932, after ten years in the United States, Jimmy Gralton returns to his native Ireland to help his mother run the family farm. A new government is in power in Ireland ten years after the end of the Civil War. Jimmy reopens the local hall… a centre for the local young people to dance, study or talk, drawing on his experience with jazz music during his exile in America. The hall becomes popular and Jimmy uses it to disseminate his Communist ideas, which arouses opposition in the local community, particularly the Church…

The straight Story

The movie is slow… but steady, based on fact, and focuses on old Alvin Straight’s odyssey to see his dying brother 300 km away – on a ride-on lawnmower, with a trailer in tow. The people he meets along the way with their kindness (and frustrations) are testament to the ventures of making the trip a success…Straight (Richard Farnsworth) is a 73-year-old man from in Laurens, Iowa, who learns that his brother is dying and wants to see him one last time.

Consider a talk by Colin Stokes – How Movies Teach Manhood. I was excited about this lecture, hoping this man’s research on the portrayal of men in movie media would shed some light into the messages various forms of entertainment are teaching men. To my disappointment, this lecture had been mistitled and should have been called: What we’re teaching Our Boys about Womanhood. Sadly, this talk echoed many of the same old feminist theories that have been popular in academia since the early 1970’s. The information was correct, but there seemed to be nothing new discussed in his analysis. This got me thinking…
